Whilst researching travel policy use and travel savings, I came across a pretty cool 1 year old article by Clive Dorman. It was titled When Business Travel Is Open Slather. The comments are largely based on a North American corporate travel survey. There are some pretty interesting (and maybe true) statements.
“…in a battle between self-interest and doing the right thing, self interest wins every time”. In my experience, Aussies are a little more caring to the boss and the company but not 100% (yet).
The most amazing statement to me is: “… of company travelers …42 per cent shunning preferred carriers and the lowest-available-fare policy”
And, finally, if the North Americans put a dollar value on their travel expenditure it states: “…survey found North American corporations could save nearly two-thirds of their travel expenditure ($US29.8 billion out of a 2009 total travel spend of $48.7 billion)”
From my vantage, one of the great benefits of the current online booking tools on offer for travel is they encourage travel policies. The more flexible tools allow different policies for different travelers and different routes. They do let you book out of policy – as long as you say WHY. And the tools are great to tell the booker ’you could save $60 or $100 or $120 if you choose the lowest in-policy fare’.
Mostcompanies gather and report those missed savings so the bosses do know how it is all going’ (eventually). More technologically advanced travel management companies can even provide email alerts on a booking by booking basis depending upon the client’s requirements.
The corporate traveler knows up front that he can save his company money on the booking. He must say why he is traveling out of policy, knowing the bookings will be gathered up in reports, and even knowing an email alert may go out. He really is ENCOURAGED to do the right thing. Encouragement is a much gentler way than enforcement!
